Parent involvement is a key component of the Migrant Education Program and is strongly encouraged. Every participating school district has a Parent Advisory Committee through which parents provide feedback on their children's education, offer ideas and recommendations, and receive training on a variety of topics. Opportunities for participation include:

  • CPR/ First Aid Training
  • La Familia Migrant Parent Conference
  • Parent Outdoor Leadership and Team Building training
  • Parent Regional Advisory Council
  • Scholarship Program
  • Parent Education Training
  • Parent Institutes

CPR Training One-day trainings are held at the district as well as regional level for migrant parents throughout the county. Frequency of trainings is based on interest of parents and availability of trainers. The La Familia Migrant Parent Conference is a local conference that was developed by Monterey County parents to address high priority subjects:

  • Community Services / Family Issues
  • Career Opportunities
  • Higher Education

Parent Outdoor Leadership and Team Building Training sessions are held outdoors twice a year for the purpose of increasing parental cooperation and team building among Regional Advisory Council members. Additionally, the participants learn group dynamics by using cooperation, team building skills, and learning to take risks. The Migrant Parent Regional Advisory Council (RAC) includes two migrant parents and one migrant High School Student from each participating school district. The Council advises the Regional Director in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Migrant Education programs. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month except in January. The President and Vice-President of the RAC attend the State Migrant Parent Advisory Council (SPAC) monthly meetings. Migrant parents attend the annual State Migrant Conference. Each year the Migrant Parent Regional Advisory Council (RAC) awards 10 to 15 scholarships to deserving migrant high school seniors. Parents participate in fundraising activities at their local site and/or regional level. In addition, parents serve on the interview panel and select the scholarship recipients. We provide Parent Education Trainings on the following topics:
