Assessments
The Monterey County Home Charter School administers a variety of assessments throughout the year.  Some of these exams are mandated by the state.  Examples of these tests are the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), which all Seniors are required to pass to graduate; the STAR assessment, which tests the core curriculum state standards in 2nd through 11th grades; and the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), which assesses the English language proficiency of students whose primary language is not English.  As a public school we are required to participate in these assessments.
We also have diagnostic assessments that are used to establish what the student’s needs might be.  Examples of these kinds of assessments are the entrance packets that students are given when they enroll.  These evaluations serve to decide what curriculum will be appropriate.  Other diagnostic tests include the beginning assessments from textbooks, the San Diego Quick Assessment, and DIBELS.
Formative assessments demonstrate that the students are learning the material.  Teacher made tests, essays, projects, and chapter tests are some of the tools used to measure progress.

Summative assessments include the state mandated tests.  The STAR test determines the student’s level of mastery of the California State Standards in the curricular areas of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Science.  The Monterey County Home Charter School also has Eighth Grade Promotion requirements.  All grade levels have school and teacher mandated final assessments.
