Thanks to the California Missions Foundation's financial assistance, 24 Title 1 elementary schools in Monterey County had the opportunity to take their 4th graders to visit the missions of Carmel, San Antonio, San Juan Bautista, San Miguel or Soledad. Learn more.
Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy Kotowski engaged with migrant students from across the county during Migrant Outreach Day at Hartnell College sponsored by Migrant Education Program Region XVI.
Monterey County Board Member Harvey Kuffner recently received an outstanding volunteer award by the United Way Monterey County during its 36th Annual Community Service Awards. Harvey has exemplified a level of commitment to Monterey County's children that is truly exemplary. He has a consistent and strong voice for change, and his influential leadership has helped to advance the various organizations for which he has served, including Community Human Services, the Monterey County Children's Council and the Monterey County Board of Education.
The Monterey County Board of Education, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools and MCOE staff participated in "May Day Munch" in recognition of the International Day of the Worker. Each department hosted food, and board members, the County Superintendent and staff "roamed" from department to department during the lunch hour to partake in social hour and food. Countywide Spelling Bee winner Cecilia Trujillo (a student from Chualar Elementary School) was recognized by Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy Kotowski and the Monterey County Board of Education during their April 18 board meeting. Cecilia advances to the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C. in May. Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy Kotowski and the Monterey County Board of Education commended the Community Partnership for Youth for its work in providing positive alternatives to gangs, drugs andviolence while reinforcing individual strengths. CPY's vision is provide youth with a safe, structured environment that encourages healthy boundaries, positive self-esteem and the ability to make good choices for a full and successful life.
Each year, volunteers from the Monterey County chapter of the California Retired Teachers Association give of their time reading to students throughout the county. This year the California Retired Teachers Association presented Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy Kotowski and the Monterey County Board of Education with a check totaling $621,691.98, representing the dollar amount of the time retired teachers have spent reading with students. Thank you retired teachers!
The Region XVI Migrant Speech and Debate team members were recognized by the Monterey County Board of Education during its April 17 board meeting. Students shared with board members their experience competing and many look forward to competing next month at the state competition.
